31.

The following morning, Fisher and Nightingale arrived at the office just before eight, giving Fisher at least an hour to prepare for his session with the Falcon. Or so he thought.

He was on his way to his desk when he heard her door click open. The strong scent of her perfume permeated the air.

‘Fisher! My office, please.’ The DCI retreated back into the room.

‘I’ll catch up with you later, Beth.’ Fisher followed the DCI into her office. ‘Your text said nine,’ he said, pressing the door closed behind him.

‘Sit down.’ He heard a chair squeak as the DCI took a seat behind her desk.

Luna led the way to a chair on the opposite side.

‘Has something happened?’ he asked.

‘Like you don’t know.’

Fisher waited for her to elaborate. When she didn’t, he said, ‘Honestly, I have no idea.’

‘Lewis Hunt was on the phone to me before I’d even got my coat off. He’s already talking about complaining to the commissioner. And who’d blame him? So, which of them was it, Beth or Andy?’

‘I have no idea what you’re talking about. What are they supposed to have done?’

‘Someone illegally gained entry into Mr Hunt’s garden and was spying on him last night.’

‘Why would anyone do that?’

‘Perhaps because they’re trying to find some evidence against him to place him as our killer.’

‘And you think I knew something about it?’

‘Mr Hunt certainly does. And I think it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he’s right. If you admit it now and agree to take the full rap, I’ll go easy on whichever of your cronies did it.’

‘Cronies? You have a strange way of talking about my colleagues…. your team. And if you think Andy or Beth would do something like that, just on my say-so, then you really have no idea. They are both good, law-abiding officers. And what would be the point anyway? It’d be a total waste of time. Anything they found would be inadmissible. Why would anyone risk their job for that?’ When DCI Fallon didn’t reply, Fisher asked, ‘Did the intruder damage or take anything?’

‘No. Hunt spotted them before they had the chance.’

‘I assume you’ve arranged for a CSI to pay him a visit and take a look around. Whoever did it might have left some evidence. There’s been a fair amount of rain recently, could be they left a shoe print.’ Again, she didn’t reply, which Fisher took to mean he’d assumed wrongly. ‘I’ll organise that then, shall I?’

Eventually she broke her silence, ‘If I find out you or any of your team had anything to do with it, heads will roll, believe me.’

Fisher stood up.

‘Do you still want a briefing at nine, or shall I go and talk to Mr Hunt, reassure him that we’re doing all that we can?’

‘Just go.’ As he reached the threshold to her office, she said, ‘You’ve got until nine tomorrow morning. And you’d better have something good for me, else… well, you’ll see.’

Lewis Hunt wasn’t at home when Fisher and Nightingale arrived. Instead, his wife, Shannon answered the door.
